Founder of House of Papier Melissa McDowell realized that she needed to get serious about blogging and come up with a plan.

A plan that would help her be successful. She quickly threw together a document with a calendar and checklists of things to do for each blog post. She planned out a week’s worth of blog topics. She felt so much better and immediately the pressure and stress of what to blog about left her. She was reminded of that famous saying, “If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.” It is so true and it applies to blogging just as it does to any other situation.

That same weekend she decide to go even further and create an editorial calendar. She came up with a system for getting blogging done! Here it is:

1. Plan, Plan, Plan. If you want to be consistent you must plan ahead. Plan out your blog posts and then schedule them. Just think how awesome it would be if you could knock out a week’s worth (or more) of blog posts and have them scheduled to automatically post each day. That would be fabulous. And it would buy back a whole lot of time during the week. I’ll have some special news to share with you soon regarding this topic. Stay tuned.

2. Share. Share all the wonderful things you are doing and contributing to your industry. After all, you know people are reading your blog so give them something worth reading. Give them a reason to keep coming back. Provide content that they will want to share and re-tweet and link to.

3. Optimize your blog posts. There are tons of experts out there on how to do this. For more detail just Google the topic and your find a bagillion tips for this. I’m going to keep it simple and share the basic and quickest steps. Really think about your keywords. Make sure they are related and that most, if not all, are actually in your blog title and content. Include inter-links (links within your blog) back to your other blog posts. What better way to drive even more traffic within your website. (Note: If you include external links, make sure that you opt for them to open in a new window. You don’t want to drive traffic away from your blog). Lastly, publish your blog posts on all of your social media accounts. Most allow you at connect directly to your blog so that everything is automated. If you prefer, you can also just do it manually.
